What does this indicator measure?

This measure represents the number of asthma-related emergency department encounters among Indiana children ages 5 to 17 per 10,000 children. It includes primary diagnoses with an ICD-9-CM code of 493.

Why is this indicator important?

Asthma is a serious public health concern that affects approximately 7 million children and 18.7 million adults in the United States (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Most asthma conditions can be effectively managed (e.g., prevent hospitalizations) by people working with their health care provider to create an Asthma Action Plan—these plans include information concerning daily treatment, medications, short- and long-term control measures, and explain when to seek medical treatment.
